Restoration Carpentry

Don't let the beauty of original historic woodwork be destroyed during a well meant restoration or renovation project. The participation of a preservation carpenter is the most reliable and cost effective way to protect the unmistakable look and feel of period architectural millwork. Even the best of conventional renovation carpenters are trained to replace work, not to preserve it.

Keith Farless, ownerof Highland Restoration, Inc., is a graduate of the Preservation Carpentry program at the North Bennett Street School in Boston. He has worked on such important museum quality restorations as Jefferson's summer home, Poplar Forest, executed under National Park Service guidelines. We excel at museum projects, but not every historic building can claim an association with a founding father. We adapt these guidelines to fit the goals and budgets of less well known but equally irreplaceable structures of southeastern New England.

We bring to the work a mix of traditional craftsmanship, state of the art wood conservation and a passion for our unique vernacular buildings, high style and low. In order to be fully accountable for the performance of our work, we maintain a full service fabrication facility. In it, we can furnish accurate reproduction of any necessary historic architectural millwork including window sash, doors, period mouldings and staircases. When hand carvings or oversized turnings are required for a project, we turn to our network of dedicated artisan specialists. Put our team on your team early in the project to save time and trouble.
